Poetry Prize Goes to Poster Whom Some Call “Tim”

Picking up on my Beaver post below, Tim writes: Barry’s query forms an eco-humdinger As beavers, by nature, give some greens the finger. I opine that the test (to make a formal arrest?) Means the cop’d have to be Peter Singer.

Cognitive Dissonance: Save the Bats or Save the Planet?

A tough choice for teh environmentalist whackos if I ever saw one. Wind Turbines Give Bats the “Bends,” Study Finds Brian Handwerk for National Geographic News August 25, 2008 Wind turbines can kill bats without touching them by causing a bends-like condition due to rapidly dropping air pressure, new research suggests. Scientists aren’t sure why, but bats are attracted to the turbines, which often stand 300 feet (90 meters) high and sport 200-foot (60-meter) blades. The mammals’ curiosity can result in lethal blows by the rotors, which spin at a rate of about 160 miles (260 kilometers) per hour. But scientist Erin Baerwald and colleagues report that only about half of the bat corpses they found near Alberta, Canada, turbine Read More ›

Sand Fleas in Massachusetts

You know the old saying “If you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas”. It seems Massachusetts has itself a case of sand fleas. I found this article from the Boston Herald linked on the Drudge Report. It’s way off topic but I’m so sure most of our readers will appreciate it I just had to give y’all a heads up. Be sure to read the comments, they’re the best part. 😆

“My Failed Simulation” taken literally at scienceblogs

When I first wrote “My Failed Simulation” (now on the discovery.org main page here and at Human Events) it really never even occurred to me that anyone would think I had actually tried such a simulation, or that I was claiming to have tried it. I thought it was pretty obvious that it was just a thought experiment, designed to get people to think about the alternative to ID, namely that physics (the Schrodinger equation plus the elemenary particles of physics plus the four known forces of physics) alone can explain computers, libraries full of science texts and novels, and the Internet. My point was, not only is this the officially accepted view of science today, but anyone who doubts Read More ›

David Berlinski and The Devil’s Delusion

David Berlinski is my favorite secular Jew and quintessential iconoclast. How could one not adore a guy who is a mathematician, no advocate of any religion, a Darwin skeptic, and phenomenally eloquent in both English and French, with a great penchant for ironic humor?

His latest opus is The Devil’s Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions, due out in April.

Practical Biology (Not)

Yet another ancestor to modern whales is hypothesized. It’s hard to believe people get paid to produce stuff like this. Whales may be related to deer-like beast By SETH BORENSTEIN AP Science Writer Wed Dec 19, 6:55 PM ET WASHINGTON – The gigantic ocean-dwelling whale may have evolved from a land animal the size of a small raccoon, new research suggests. What might be the missing evolutionary link between whales and land animals is an odd animal that looks like a long-tailed deer without antlers or an overgrown long-legged rat, fossils indicate. The creature is called Indohyus, and recently unearthed fossils reveal some crucial evolutionary similarities between it and water-dwelling cetaceans, such as whales, dolphins and porpoises. For years, the Read More ›

Atheism: An Intellectual Revolt or Pelvic Rebellion?

This is just too funny to pass up. As a preemptive strike against any commenters who feel a need to say “Aha! ID is all about religion” put a sock in it. I filed this under “Humor”. HT to Jon Wells for giving me the link to this article. Atheism: An Intellectual Revolt or Pelvic Rebellion? By Doug Giles Saturday, October 27, 2007 Atheists would love for everyone to believe that their motive for not believing is an intellectual one. Yes, the atheists ardently suppose that they are wise and the Christians, well, we’re the buckle-shoed buttheads. Yes, darling, the atheists would love all of us to suppose that they cannot believe because they are so astute and rational, and Read More ›

How Science Works

For those not familiar with it, be sure to visit this site. At the bottom of the homepage there are links to various chapters. They are all worth a look, but be sure to check out the chapter on evolution. (I also loved the tables and charts, especially the geologic ages and events chart.)

From the site:

What is Science?
Put most simply, science is a way of dealing with the world around us. It is a way of baffling the uninitiated with incomprehensible jargon. It is a way of obtaining fat government grants…
