We’ve talked about the riots here.. They were especially shocking to many because they appeared largely unmotivated by any specific cause, which is not normal for human beings.

There are large parts of Britain, Europe and even the United States where religion is a thing of the past and there is no counter-voice to the culture of buy it, spend it, wear it, flaunt it, because you’re worth it. The message is that morality is passé, conscience is for wimps, and the single overriding command is “Thou shalt not be found out.”
And when we are found out, we claim that we are evolved animals whose minds are an illusion and we have no control over our actions.
No wait, we are all too doped up for that; our betters claim it on our behalf, in the name of science.
The Chief Rabbi’s proposal, unfortunately for the Dawkins crowd, means – among other things – restoring traditional spirituality as a normal factor in people’s lives. (Here is the complaint to the BBC about his recent interview hatefest against religious people, and the bureaucracy’s “sod off” reaction to the complaint.)
The poignant photo accompanying the story says it all: A priest and an imam praying together in the Hackney rubble – and a rabbi telling it like it is – but it was not devout Christian or Muslim or Jewish youth who rioted …. Who did then?
