This time they are burning books in Portland.

Read the last paragraph of this resolution adopted by the Portland School Board.

Because the suppression of doubt or skepticism is the foundation of any good science education.  Right?

As Robert Tracinski reports:

Actually, the story is even worse than what conservative news sites have reported. It’s not just that Portland banished from its schools any active denial of catastrophic, man-made global warming; it’s that they banished any language that implies the smallest amount of doubt. Bill Bigelow, a former teacher now working for the activist group that pushed this resolution, explained its rationale in testimony to the school board:

“Bigelow said PPS’ science textbooks are littered with words like ‘might,’ ‘may,’ and ‘could’ when talking about climate change. ‘Carbon dioxide emissions from motor vehicles, power plants and other sources, may contribute to global warming,’ he quotes Physical Sciencepublished by Pearson as saying. ‘This is a section that could be written by the Exxon public relations group and it’s being taught in Portland schools.’”

Well, at least Nick Matzke will be proud.

Climate change alarmism is a religion, and these particular religionists will brook no doubt of their sacred doctrines.

"After hearing that skeptics are mouthpieces for Big Oil, this claim on behalf of the climateers needs to be taken with a few tons of salt." Yes, prominent Warmers fly around in private jets because they save the planet for free. hahaha Andrewasauber

When any authority censors or bans ideas/opinions then they are breaking the contract of the peoples right to truth AND SO the right to contend for truth and so the right to free speech. Thats what must be argued. not just about fanatics or liberals. its a bigger deal. Its common in history where is passion is up. Resistance must be better then claims of free speech. We must resist on greater concepts from which free speech simply is a tool. Its not just global warming but anything they want to control/influence the peoples opinions.Robert Byers

Nobody is burning any books, are they? Does the Portland School Board have the right to make decisions about what texts they will use in Portland schools? Or are there some supervening rules they are breaking with this decision?CLAVDIVS

"Bigelow is also the co-author of a textbook on environmental education, A People’s Curriculum for the Earth. Asked if this resolution will cause the district to buy new textbooks, such as his book, Bigelow said Rethinking Schools is a nonprofit, not a money-maker." Huh. Andrewasauber
