Is the term “biological information” meaningful?

Some say that it’s not clear that the term is useful. A friend writes, “Information is always “about” something. How does one quantify “aboutness. ” He considers the term too vague to be helpful.”

He suggests the work of Christoph Adami, for example, this piece at Quanta:

The polymath Christoph Adami is investigating life’s origins by reimagining living things as self-perpetuating information strings.

Once you start thinking about life as information, how does it change the way you think about the conditions under which life might have arisen?

Life is information stored in a symbolic language. It’s self-referential, which is necessary because any piece of information is rare, and the only way you make it stop being rare is by copying the sequence with instructions given within the sequence. The secret of all life is that through the copying process, we take something that is extraordinarily rare and make it extraordinarily abundant.

But where did that first bit of self-referential information come from?

We of course know that all life on Earth has enormous amounts of information that comes from evolution, which allows information to grow slowly. Before evolution, you couldn’t have this process. As a consequence, the first piece of information has to have arisen by chance.

A lot of your work has been in figuring out just that probability, that life would have arisen by chance.

On the one hand, the problem is easy; on the other, it’s difficult. We don’t know what that symbolic language was at the origins of life. It could have been RNA or any other set of molecules. But it has to have been an alphabet. The easy part is asking simply what the likelihood of life is, given absolutely no knowledge of the distribution of the letters of the alphabet. In other words, each letter of the alphabet is at your disposal with equal frequency. More.

So Chance wrote an alphabet? And created “aboutness”? It;s not the same type of chance we live with today.

And then the coup de grace for demonstrating that immaterial information is its own distinct physical entity, separate from matter and energy, is Quantum Teleportation:

Moreover, quantum information/entanglement simply refuses to be reduced to any reasonable within space-time, matter-energy, explanation:

Besides providing direct empirical falsification of neo-Darwinian claims that say information is ’emergent’ from a material basis, the implication of finding ‘non-local’, beyond space and time, and ‘conserved’, quantum information in molecular biology on such a massive scale, in every DNA and protein molecule, is fairly and pleasantly obvious. That pleasant implication, or course, being the fact that we now have strong physical evidence suggesting that we do indeed have an eternal soul that lives beyond the death of our material bodies.

The belief that evolution can slowly grow information is a unfounded belief which has no empirical support. 'It is almost universally acknowledged that beneficial mutations are rare compared to deleterious mutations':

Even the gain of function mutations listed in Behe's paper were the result of the experimenters first deleting a gene and then the programming of the cell modifying the genome to compensate for that deleted gene. In other words, no one has ever demonstrated the origin of a completely new gene by Darwinian processes. They have only demonstrated the replacement of a preexisting gene that was deleted. (And even then, the replacement gene was not generated by truly 'random', i.e. Darwinian, processes.) Thus whilst the belief that evolution will 'slowly grow information' seems to be widespread, it is a completely unfounded belief that has never been empirically demonstrated, The second erroneous belief from the article is the belief that information is 'emergent' from a material basis. In other words, the author assumes reductive materialism to be true. Yet, as the video you highlighted in the OP points out News, information is, contrary to Darwinian assumptions, its own distinct physical entity that is separate from matter and energy. i.e. Information is NOT 'emergent' from a material basis as is assumed Darwinian evolution. In the following paper, Dr Andy C. McIntosh, who is professor of thermodynamics and combustion theory at the University of Leeds, holds that it is non-material information that constrains biological life to be so far out of thermodynamic equilibrium. Moreover, Dr. McIntosh holds that regarding information as independent of energy and matter ‘resolves the thermodynamic issues and invokes the correct paradigm for understanding the vital area of thermodynamic/organisational interactions’.
Information and Thermodynamics in Living Systems – Andy C. McIntosh – 2013 Excerpt: ,,, information is in fact non-material and that the coded information systems (such as, but not restricted to the coding of DNA in all living systems) is not defined at all by the biochemistry or physics of the molecules used to store the data. Rather than matter and energy defining the information sitting on the polymers of life, this approach posits that the reverse is in fact the case. Information has its definition outside the matter and energy on which it sits, and furthermore constrains it to operate in a highly non-equilibrium thermodynamic environment. And in support of Dr. McIntosh’s contention that it must be non-material information which constrains biological life to be so far out of thermodynamic equilibrium, and as was briefly mentioned in the “What is information?” video, information has now been experimentally shown to have a ‘thermodynamic content’:

Of related note to immaterial information having a ‘thermodynamic content’, classical digital information was found to be a subset of ‘non-local’, (i.e. beyond space and time), quantum entanglement/information by the following method which removed heat from a computer by the deletion of data:
Quantum knowledge cools computers: New understanding of entropy – June 2011 Excerpt: No heat, even a cooling effect; In the case of perfect classical knowledge of a computer memory (zero entropy), deletion of the data requires in theory no energy at all. The researchers prove that “more than complete knowledge” from quantum entanglement with the memory (negative entropy) leads to deletion of the data being accompanied by removal of heat from the computer and its release as usable energy. This is the physical meaning of negative entropy. Renner emphasizes, however, “This doesn’t mean that we can develop a perpetual motion machine.” The data can only be deleted once, so there is no possibility to continue to generate energy.
