It says: "Go ahead, waste my time"

CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) – you know, those stupid squiggly meaningless letters you’re supposed to interpret before you can post a polite comment- besides being the fourth most annoying thing on the Internet, in a list that includes trolls, spammers, and uranazis – don’t actually work that well. Alert spammers can

bust them about 30% of the time.

So everyone’s time is wasted and you get spammed anyway

A new technology called HIVE (Human Intelligence Verification Engine) is in closed beta testing: Its Ottawa software engineers say that the real difference between humans and computers is that humans can make intuitive connections between, say, an apple and a doctor (= an apple a day keeps the doctor away).

Maybe one could use sheer computing power to bust that, but one suspects that Spambo will be busy a while with that…

In this fun vid Chris Ivey invites you to help beta test it. A  look at what does and doesn’t work with automating intelligence.

With any luck: 2111: How’s it goin’, Spambo IV?

Also, check out reCAPTCHA for a clever, constructive solution, that uses human pattern recognition to augment the shortcomings of OCR (optical character recognition). material.infantacy
Very interesting idea, but I wonder how they are *generated*. It seems like this would require a database to generate, and the same sort of database could be used to reverse it. Maybe? Or did they figure that one out? johnnyb
