Evolutionary biologist Richard Sternberg challenges what he calls the “National Geographic” or “textbook” view of the fossil record as a support for modern Darwinian theory. In this bonus interview released as part of the Science Uprising series, Sternberg unpacks what the fossil record really shows, what we learn from population genetics about Darwinian theory, and how the Darwinian mechanism can’t account for the evolution of whales. He also examines competing scientific explanations for the abrupt appearance of new body plans in the history of life.

Richard Sternberg is an evolutionary biologist with interests in the relation between genes and morphological homologies, and the nature of genomic “information.” He holds two Ph.D.’s: one in Biology (Molecular Evolution) from Florida International University and another in Systems Science (Theoretical Biology) from Binghamton University. From 2001-2007, he served as a staff scientist at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and from 2001-2007 was a Research Associate at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Sternberg is presently a research scientist at Discovery Institute. (December 14, 2021)

    Yet, in spite of the fact that Darwinists themselves excluded biological form from the conceptual framework of the Modern Synthesis as being quote-unquote ‘irrelevant’, Darwinists still assume, (apparently with no justification whatsoever), that changes to DNA have the potential to eventually change the basic biological form and/or body plan of any given species into a brand new body plan of a brand new species.

    And this seemingly ‘miraculous’ ability of D. radiodurans to reassemble its shattered genome is not just some freak of nature, but this ‘miraculous’ ability is now shown to be an inherent, and common, feature of e-coli.

    Needless to say, that is a astonishingly massive amount of information that is somehow coming into the developing embryo of a single human body, “from the outside by some ‘non-material’ method’.

    I agree with your general conclusion that the total information constituting living organisms is beyond huge, even beyond imagination, but I think this is an overestimation of it. Much of the information specifying the subcellular molecular arrangements within cells is endlessly repeated in other cells of the same type, such as neurons, for instance. Similarly, patterns of arrangement of the cells constituting tissues and organs are endlessly repeated over the structures of these organs. The way it may work is that wherever the data specifying form is stored, this data, for efficiency of storage, includes specifications of the details of large scale patterns and how they are to be repeated to form the structures of cells and how millions of identical cell types form organs and tissues. This would greatly reduce the bulk of the data needed to be stored.

    Of course, this sort of scheme would require the activity of an even greater intelligence than one that just directly translates physical form from a plan that is total and complete down to the minutest detail.

    A rough analogy would be a blueprint and specification for the manufacture of a computer. It would have just one assembly specification for the micro-transistors making up the memory, a single specification for the manufacture of each of the individual logic circuit types comprising multiple transistors, etc., combined with further specifications of how these component parts (endlessly repeated) are to be structured on the circuit boards. Rather than endlessly repeating the same micro-assembly instructions for each individual transistor and combining that with physical placement instructions for each individual transistor.
