Uncommon Descent Serving The Intelligent Design Community

How do we know an intelligent agent produced something and it is not just an accident?

Casey Luskin offers:

“Intelligent agents sometimes produce material entities through a series of gradual modifications (as when a sculptor shapes a sculpture over time). Nevertheless, intelligent agents also have the capacity to introduce complex technological systems into the world fully formed. Often such systems bear no resemblance to earlier technological systems — their invention occurs without a material connection to earlier, more rudimentary technologies. When the radio was first invented, it was unlike anything that had come before, even other forms of communication technology. For this reason, although intelligent agents need not generate novel structures abruptly, they can do so.”2

He means someone phoning and telling you something that changes your life?

. In reality, the invention of the radio was much more akin to Darwinian gradualism, the way all inventions are.
Pure nonsense. Darwinian gradualism can only break things. It doesn't invent anything but genetic diseases and deformities.ET

He could have been describing genetics
Yes! Darwin’s processes do explain some genetics but only limited change. But not Evolution. For that Darwin’s processes are self refuting and couldn’t possibly be the mechanism sought for. Aside: If anyone is interested in intelligence on display, study innovation. A good place is Matt Ridley’s book, The Evolution of Everything. It’s a great illustration that the only Evolution ever documented is through intelligence. Aside2: ChuckDarwin still vying for the best advocate of ID. He has a near perfect batting average.jerry

Chuckdarwin, Unless you can find the telegraphs naturally forming themselves, not built by man, then you can point to something like that. The problem is that it took a man to create the telegraph. The telegraph shows clear thought behind the design.BobRyan

Edison said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” He could have been describing evolution……
The only pretty huge problem with your claim is, that you people Darwinists can't show those 10,000 ways where evolution failed or does not work.. In real life and even in fossil records we only see fully developed and flawlessly working species ... This trial-error process claim, just another example of Darwinism brainwashing...martin_r

Actually, the radio started out as a wireless telegraph for which Marconi received a British patent in the 1890s. Morse Code was used just like wired telegraph. Then by gradual steps GE refined the system with alternators that could transmit sounds over greater and greater distances. Luskin needs to go back to the drawing board on the radio example. Radio didn’t just pop out of Marconi’s head whole cloth. In reality, the invention of the radio was much more akin to Darwinian gradualism, the way all inventions are. Like Edison said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” He could have been describing evolution……chuckdarwin
