Who would have thought that the tiny West Africa nation of The Gambia, where British slave trade thrived centuries ago, would someday provide a devastating blow to Darwin’s theory on “the Preservation of Favoured Races.” But The Gambia’s consistent climate of rainy and dry seasons made for the perfect experimental conditions to test what is already known to be true in animals; namely, that not only does the food that you eat carry with it instructions for your body, and not only does the food that your mother eats while pregnant with you also influence your body, but the feed that she eats before conception also influences your body.  Read more

How much was Jesus’s death worth? More than one dollar? Well since God raised him from the dead as 'proof of purchase' that we have been redeemed from our sins, why don't you ask Him? He apparently considers it 'ransom' enough for our salvation before his infinite and perfect holiness and justice! Psalm 49:6-9 They that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches, none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him (for the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever), that they should still live for ever, and not see corruption. 1 Corinthians 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Barb, if the discussion was about the Descent of Man, why was the reference made to the sub-title of the Origin of Species? The only reason would be to ascribe a racist undertone to his theory of natural selection. Although Darwin's prediction that the civilized races will exterminate the non civilized ones has not come through (not through lack of trying) but it is coming to pass culturally. Although I would use the word civilized because I don't think that any culture has yet earned that right. BA77, I have never suggested that natural selection should be used as a guide for society, and neither did Darwin.Acartia_bogart

Acartia_bogart, the trouble with the atheistic/materialistic Darwinian worldview as to providing a firm foundation for any society to operate is that any purported inherent dignity and value for humans is illusory. Whereas in Theism, particularly Christian Theism, humans derive their inherent dignity and value from being made in the image of God. In other words, Just how do you derive true value for a person from a philosophy that maintains transcendent values are illusory?: How much is my body worth? Excerpt: The U.S. Bureau of Chemistry and Soils invested many a hard-earned tax dollar in calculating the chemical and mineral composition of the human body,,,,Together, all of the above (chemicals and minerals) amounts to less than one dollar! http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/worth.asp I would like to think that you hold that you are of more value than a dollar Acartia_bogart?!? But if you truly believe that you are merely molecules in motion, and nothing more, what argument could you possibly put forward that you are of more worth than the $1s worth of material you are made of? Why should your particular arrangement of material carry any more value than any other particular arrangement of matter since your arrangement is just happenstance and was not the work of a craftsman? Whereas Theism, particularly Christianity, has no trouble whatsoever figuring out how much humans are worth, since infinite Almighty God has shown us how much we mean to him: John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. MercyMe – Beautiful - music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vh7-RSPuAA There is simply no way to derive any true meaning and value for life without God, as Dr. Craig makes clear in the following video: The absurdity of life without God (1 of 3) by William Lane Craig – video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJqkpI1W75cbornagain77

Acartia @ 10:
The sub-title was not a reference to human races.
The Origin of Species does not refer to humans, but Descent of Man (being discussed here) does. You can't object to what are seen as the unsavory aspects of biblical history while at the same time dismissing other historical racism as 'of the time'. In Chapter 6 of the Descent of Man, On the Affinities and Genealogy of Man, Darwin argues that he expected the civilized races of men to fully exterminate the savage races of men in just a few centuries. Now, while Darwin certainly did not invent racism, what he did was provide was a scientific rationale that justified racial prejudice.Barb

Barb, nobody is arguing that the Victorians did not feel themselves superior to the other races, but the argument that Darwin was a racist because of the sub-title of the book is a non starter. The use of the word "race" has changed since then. The sub-title was not a reference to human races. In fact, The Origin of Species hardly refers to humans at all. It wasn't until The Descent of Man that he attempted to apply his theory to humans. I haven't read it buy I would be willing to bet that it is biased by the common thinking of his time. All books, regardless of when they were written, suffer this fate, including the bible. The Old Testament commands that homosexuals and adulterers be killed. But all but a vanishingly small number of people who call themselves Christians would ever suggest this now.Acartia_bogart

Acartia,
Another attempt to use Darwin’s sub-title to brand him a racist.
Because what he was advocating was racial superiority. I’ll grant that this was a common notion in Victorian England, but it still brands him a racist.
Although, it is another piece of evidence that humans are nothing special.
Despite the fact that humans alone have the capacity for language and appreciation for concepts such as art, music, and beauty while animals do not.Barb

" provide a devastating blow to Darwin’s theory on “the Preservation of Favoured Races.”" Another attempt to use Darwin's sub-title to brand him a racist. In Darwin's day, the term race was also used to describe different varieties of animals. And that is the context in which he used it. We have long known that the expression of genes and the ultimate phenotype that develops is a combination of genetics and environment. This is just another study that demonstrates this. Although, it is another piece of evidence that humans are nothing special.Acartia_bogart

Further notes:
Are Religious People Happier Than Atheists? - 2000 Excerpt: there does indeed appear to be a link between religion and happiness. Several studies have been done, but to give an example, one study found that the more frequently people attended religious events, the happier they were; 47% of people who attended several types a week reported that they were ‘very happy’, as opposed to 28% who attended less than monthly. http://generallythinking.com/are-religious-people-happier-than-atheists/ Atheism and health Excerpt: A meta-analysis of all studies, both published and unpublished, relating to religious involvement and longevity was carried out in 2000. Forty-two studies were included, involving some 126,000 subjects. Active religious involvement increased the chance of living longer by some 29%, and participation in public religious practices, such as church attendance, increased the chance of living longer by 43%.[4][5] http://www.conservapedia.com/Atheism_and_health ABC News - The Science Behind the Healing Power of Love - video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t1p-PwGgE4 Social isolation and its health implications January 2012 Excerpt: Studies show that social isolation and/or loneliness predict morbidity and mortality from cancer, cardiovascular disease, and a host of other diseases. In fact, the body perceives loneliness as a threat. Research from the University of California suggests that loneliness or lack of social support could triple the odds of being diagnosed with a heart condition. Redford Williams and his colleagues at Duke University directed a study in 1992 on heart patients and their relationships. They discovered that 50% of patients with heart disease who did not have a spouse or someone to confide in died within five years, while only 17% of those who did have a confidante died in the same time period.12 http://www.how-to-be-healthy.org/social-isolation-and-its-health-implications/

As elaborate as epigenetic control of the genome is turning out to be,,,
The Mysterious Epigenome. What lies beyond DNA - video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpXs8uShFMo "The Mysterious Epigenome: What Lies Beyond DNA" - May 2012 - podcast http://intelligentdesign.podomatic.com/entry/2012-05-30T12_57_28-07_00 Epigenetics: Feast, Famine, and Fatness - Helen Kollias - December 25th, 2009 Excerpt: In the last five to ten years, there has been more and more evidence showing there is a non-genetic part that can be passed down to children and even grandchildren. As of this summer there are over 100 scientific articles documenting non-DNA inheritance, also called transgenerational epigenetics (1). http://www.precisionnutrition.com/epigenetics-feast-famine-and-fatness
As elaborate, and non-Darwinian, as all that is turning out to be, I still, personally, think that the most devastating finding from epigenetics is the finding that we are not completely helpless 'victims of our genes', as Darwinists have consistently held, but that our 'mental states' can have a pronounced effect on gene expression:
Genie In Your Genes – video http://www.genieinyourgenes.com/ggtrailer.html Anxiety May Shorten Your Cell Life – July 12, 2012 Excerpt: These studies had the advantage of large data sets involving thousands of participants. If the correlations remain robust in similar studies, it would indicate that mental states and lifestyle choices can produce epigenetic effects on our genes. http://crev.info/2012/07/anxiety-may-shorten-your-cell-life/ Scientists Finally Show How Your Thoughts Can Cause Specific Molecular Changes To Your Genes, - December 10, 2013 Excerpt: “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that shows rapid alterations in gene expression within subjects associated with mindfulness meditation practice,”,,, “Most interestingly, the changes were observed in genes that are the current targets of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs,”,,, the researchers say, there was no difference in the tested genes between the two groups of people at the start of the study. The observed effects were seen only in the meditators following mindfulness practice. In addition, several other DNA-modifying genes showed no differences between groups, suggesting that the mindfulness practice specifically affected certain regulatory pathways. http://www.tunedbody.com/scientists-finally-show-thoughts-can-cause-specific-molecular-changes-genes/ How those marital rows can be bad for your health by JENNY HOPE – December 2005 Excerpt: Married couples who constantly argue risk damaging their health, according to a study. It found that marital rows can prolong the time it takes the body to heal itself after an injury. One argument alone can slow this process by a day. And the study claims that when married couples feel consistently hostile towards one another, the delay in the healing process can be doubled. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-370708/How-marital-rows-bad-health.html The health benefits of happiness - Mark Easton - 2006 Excerpt: "It's not just that if you're physically well you're likely to be happy but actually the opposite way round," said Dr Cox. (Extensive studies show that) "If you are happy you are (much more) likely in the future to have less in the way of physical illness than those who are unhappy". http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/happiness_formula/4924180.stm The Healing Power of Positive Words By Linda Wasmer Andrews - Jun 08, 2012 Excerpt: When researchers analyzed the autobiographies of famous deceased psychologists, they found that those who used lots of active positive words (such as lively, enthusiastic, happy) tended to outlive their other colleagues. Within this category of words, the biggest boost came from humor-related terms (such as laugh, funny, giggle), which were associated with living six years longer, on average. In contrast, passive positive words (such as peaceful, calm, relaxed) and negative words (such as worried, angry, lonely) didn’t affect longevity. http://health.yahoo.net/experts/allinyourmind/health-power-positive-words Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

The sheer intricacies and interdependencies of epigenetics, and the lack of an evolutionary fitness pathway, are inconsistent with an evolutionary origin.
