China Overtakes U.S. as No. 1 Emitter of Carbon Dioxide

Excerpt:

A new study by a Dutch research group said China, which relies on coal for two-thirds of its energy needs and makes 44 percent of the world’s cement, produced 6.23 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2006. In comparison, the U.S., which gets half its electricity from coal, produced 5.8 billion metric tons of CO2, it said.

China has overtaken the United States as the world’s top producer of carbon dioxide emissions — the biggest man-made contributor to global warming — based on the latest widely accepted energy consumption data, a Dutch research group says.
According to a report released Tuesday by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, China overtook the U.S. in emissions of CO2 by about 7.5 percent in 2006. While China was 2 percent below the United States in 2005, voracious coal consumption and increased cement production caused the numbers to rise rapidly, the group said.

In case you didn’t know it China is exempt from the Kyoto Treaty calling for signatory nations to reduce C02 emissions. Isn’t that just precious?

I'm not saying China is in the wrong here. I'm only saying that if global warming was believed to be as dire as the advocates were saying, an exemption for China and India is not justified easily. Per capita comparisons may show the US as being excessive, sure - but we're talking about people who are saying that, if greenhouse gas emissions are not restricted, the earth may well be uninhabitable or close to it in 100 years. "This may wipe out humanity in the relatively near future, but due to political considerations we have to exempt two major producers of CO2" just doesn't wash.nullasalus

China, which has a population of 1.3 billion people, spews about 10,500 pounds of carbon dioxide per person, while the United States releases nearly 42,500 pounds per person. Look at it from a per capita basis. Also, listen to China's complaints. http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/06/21/china.climate.ap/index.html?section=cnn_latestMatthewTan

And finding this out years ago is what made me hesitant about buying into the global warming craze. I can accept the climate is changing. I can accept the world may be warming. I can even accept that man may be responsible, though I'm not certain. But when I hear talk of how cataclysmic global warming is, and may well doom us all to a dramatic death if we don't restrict out greenhouse gas emissions - but China and India are exempt - I stop accepting. If the forecasts were really that dire, and if their contribution is that large, why leave them out? "Well, they're developing countries. And besides, we got to do it when we developed so it's only fair, even though Earth itself hangs in the balance on this one."? Sorry. It comes across as far too insincere.nullasalus
