Uncommon Descent Serving The Intelligent Design Community

Public records lawsuit on teaching creationism in Louisiana

It’s a clever move on the part of Darwin’s followers, because school systems threatened by charters and vouchers with the need to raise their standards may pile on, hoping to increase the costs and reduce the standards of independent schools down to their level. Read More ›

Col. Rick Rescorla, the UK-born Vietnam Vet and Morgan-Stanley Dean-Witter security chief who predicted BOTH WTC attacks, and sacrificed his life saving 2,700+ others . . .

Today, let us reflect on Col. Rick Rescorla, the man who saw it coming TWICE, and then sacrificed his life saving over 2,700 lives on September 11, 2001: [youtube w9jUEp_l7cE] I cannot but pause and show a video still of the Col on that fateful day as he rallied his people, bullhorn in hand:   It is easy to be wise after the fact, but so hard to have foresight and persistence in the face of inevitable misunderstanding and skepticism from those who don’t see things that way — and who will too often blindly oppose and frustrate. So, it is important to learn from case studies of insight and foresight, lest we fall to the mad march of folly Read More ›

Is this “religion”?

Further to the Discovery Institute’s recent letter to BSU President Dr. Jo Ann Gora (pictured above), protesting the university’s “violation of academic freedom with regard to faculty discussions of intelligent design,” I’d like to ask readers what they think of the following passages, which are taken from a leading best-seller written by a prominent evolutionary biologist, in defense of Darwinian evolution: Natural selection is not a master engineer, but a tinkerer. It doesn’t produce the absolute perfection achievable by a designer starting from scratch, but merely the best it can do with what it has to work with. (p. 12) A conscientious designer might have given the turtles an extra pair of limbs, with retractable shovel-like appendages, but turtles, like Read More ›

The Inexorable March of Convergent Evolution Continues

One of the most powerful evidences for evolution are the similarities between species. The reason why the similarities are such powerful evidence is that a great variety of designs are possible. A wise designer certainly would make use of this great variety of possible designs but common descent is restricted to whatever is available. Consider, for example, the pentadactyl structure—five digits (four fingers and a thumb for humans) at the end of the limb structure—which is found throughout the tetrapods. The activities of this massive group of fauna include flying, grasping, climbing and crawling. Such diverse activities, evolutionists reason, should require diverse limbs. There seems to be no reason why all should need a five digit limb. Why not three Read More ›

Happy anti-theist PZ Myers takes issue with pitiless Richard Dawkins over pedophelia

The anti-theist soap opera continues. PZ used to fawn over Dawkins, but no longer. I was surprised Dawkins didn’t even give so much as a tweet for PZ’s book, now it is apparent why — the two don’t seem to be bosom buddies anymore. PZ writes: I’ve strained to pardon Richard Dawkins’ many insensitivities — ‘dear muslima’, the missteps on twitter, the petty snits against other people — but his latest is just a disaster. In an interview in The Times magazine on Saturday (Sept. 7), Dawkins, 72, he said he was unable to condemn what he called “the mild pedophilia” he experienced at an English school when he was a child in the 1950s. … other children in his Read More ›

Plato’s View of the Multiverse

“Someone has (I think quite condescendingly) just told me that “Multiverses are suggested by pure math.. They are not ‘made up’.” (Obviously, the key word here is “suggested”. But in what sense might this be considered a true statement?)” Math holds a special place in the heart of most Modernists or Materialists, because math is entirely unmaterial, unphysical, and yet seems to partake of pure truth. If you speak to a mathematician, he will undoubtedly tell you he is a Platonist, that Math is something you discover, not something you invent. So when a materialist wants to tell you that something is absolutely, unalterable true, he has no better place to go than Math. That is why your friend is Read More ›

If Darwinism were true, what is there to gain?

Nothing. First, let us compare Darwinism against real scientific theories like electro-magnetism. If electro magnetism is true, then we already know what there is to gain by electro-magnetism being true. We can build appliances that work on electricity and magnetism. We can build radios, cell phones, computers and space ships and do all sorts of cool things. Second, let us compare Darwinism against other possibly wrong theories like various alternative energy theories. For example, if we can rectify the zero-point energy that is present in all space via a Josephson junction diode, we could solve the world’s energy problems. Some will say this violates the 2nd law, and others will say the 2nd law doesn’t apply to that situation, we’re Read More ›
