Can combining the multiverse with the “many worlds” theory save current cosmology?

In many worlds theory, a gone cat both lives and dies.

In “When the multiverse and many-worlds collide” (New Scientist, 01 June 2011), Justin Mullins explains,

Two of the strangest ideas in modern physics – that the cosmos constantly splits into parallel universes in which every conceivable outcome of every event happens, and the notion that our universe is part of a larger multiverse – have been unified into a single theory. This solves a bizarre but fundamental problem in cosmology and has set physics circles buzzing with excitement, as well as some bewilderment.

In a multiverse, there is an arbitrarily large number of such cats.

Cosmologist Raphael Bousso at the University of California, Berkeley, accuses his community of “lying to ourselves,” by assuming that superpositions between particles (= here and there, both at once) eventually collapse into a single state. Maybe they don’t. Maybe information about one state leaks away, leaving only information about the other one.

If you can prevent it – by tracking all the information about all possible states – you can preserve the superposition.

This echoes the quantum Zeno effect – the watched elementary particle really doesn’t decohere. But bringing in many worlds and multiverses seems a radical way of resolving the quantum Zeno effect. Still, pressing on,

What Bousso and Susskind have done is to come up with an explanation for how the universe as a whole might decohere. Their trick is to think of the volume of space that encompasses all the information in our universe and everything it might possibly interact with in the future. In previous work, Susskind has dubbed this region a causal patch. The new idea is that our universe is just one causal patch among many others in a much bigger multiverse.

The leak of information from our causal patch causes the universe that we observe.

So Bousso and Susskind also link their interpretation to “many worlds” theory, which, Mullins says, is newly popular in the last decade:

According to this strange idea, when a superposition of states occurs, the cosmos splits into multiple parallel but otherwise identical universes. In one universe we might see the cat survive and in another we see it die. This results in an infinite number of parallel universes in which every conceivable outcome of every event actually happens.

They have proposed a mathematical framework in which“the alternative realities of the many worlds interpretation are the additional causal patches that make up the multiverse.” Reaction is, of course, varied.

We also learned recently,

Physicists seeking to understand the deepest levels of reality now work within a framework largely of Susskind’s making. But a funny thing has happened along the way. Susskind now wonders whether physicists can understand reality.

That is to say, the instantaneous teleportation/travel of information is instantaneous to both the temporal and speed of light frameworks, not just the speed of light framework. Information teleportation/travel is not limited by time, nor space, in any way, shape or form, in any frame of reference, as light is seemingly limited to us. Thus ‘pure transcendent information’ is shown to be timeless (eternal) and completely transcendent of all material frameworks. Moreover, concluding from all lines of evidence we have now examined; transcendent, eternal, infinite information is indeed real and the framework in which ‘It’(He) resides is the primary reality (highest dimension) that can exist, (in so far as our limited perception of a primary reality, highest dimension, can be discerned). @Bornagain77: if you adhere to the Copenhagen interpretation, then reality is just an illusion and the only things that exists are the things that you measure. That doesn't make you so different from Susskin who adhere as well to this interpretation and believe that if there exist an independent reality, this one is out of reach? Regarding the quantum wave collapse, please could you give me the speed at which it collapse? Is there any experiment that has actually observed the collapse of a quantum wave?Kyrilluk

It seems to me that all of this multiverse and "many worlds" perspective is simply to avoid the conclusion that the consciousness of a sentient observer is necessary and central to any notion of what "reality" is. Perhaps trying to explain the behavior of quanta that is being directly affected by conscious intent without referring to the conscious intent results in having to postulate infinite universes to accommodate the behavior.William J. A recent scientific experiment, inspired by Bohm-DeBroglie interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, has shown that we can describe the path of a photon. According to Copenhagen this should be impossible and this is why people believe that QM is non-deterministic. If QM is non-deterministic then we can postulate the existence of billions of parallel universe in order to bring back reality into QM. But then, if the Bohmian interpretation of QM is correct, we live in ONE Universe, where particles are real (they exists even if we don't look at them) and have a path and the Schroedinger Cat is Alive or Dead but not both at the same time. In other words: Einstein, Schroedinger, etc.. were right from the beguining: God don't play dice. I know that some ID's believe that non-deterministic QM somehow explain free will but they forget that the greatest scientific minds such as Newton and Maxwell, were zealous christian and still accepted the fact that our Universe can be described by deterministic process. Free will is something that God gives, not something that "emerge" from random fluctuation of the void...Kyrilluk
