We examine how the premature death of eminent life scientists alters the vitality of their fields. While the flow of articles by collaborators into affected fields decreases after the death of a star scientist, the flow of articles by non-collaborators increases markedly. This surge in contributions from outsiders draws upon a different scientific corpus and is disproportionately likely to be highly cited. While outsiders appear reluctant to challenge leadership within a field when the star is alive, the loss of a luminary provides an opportunity for fields to evolve in new directions that advance the frontier of knowledge.

I think it is human nature for people to reflect on a person’s contributions to their field after they die. In some cases it may reinforce the direction that their work was taking and in others it may result in the research taking a different direction.Ed George_{November 8, 2019

I used to think that if ID could only get its evidence to the right people in the right places, an get a fair hearing, then those people would change their mind about Darwinian evolution and we would have a fundamental ‘paradigm shift’ from the ‘top down’. But after a few years of banging my head on that wall to no avail, I realized that it is not a head problem with these people so much as it is a heart problem. i.e. many influential people in academia simply don’t want Design to be true no matter what evidence you present to them.

Indeed, in many educational institutions, there is a systematic effort in academia to censor, intimidate, and/or Expel anyone who does not toe the Darwinian party line. Thus the growth in popular support for ID has been more of a ‘bottom up’ affair, i.e. "a new generation grows up that is familiar with it":

And the irony of all this is that studies now establish that the design inference is ‘knee jerk’ inference that is built into everyone, especially including atheists, and that atheists have to mentally work suppressing their “knee jerk” design inference!

It is not that Atheists do not see purpose and/or Design in nature and biology, it is that Atheists, for whatever severely misguided reason, live in denial of the purpose and/or Design that they themselves see in nature. And yes, ‘denialism’ is considered a mental illness.

Perhaps the two most famous quotes of atheists purposely suppressing their innate ‘design inference’ are the following two quotes:

I hold the preceding studies that show atheists to be 'suppressing the truth' about Intelligent Design within there own minds to be confirming evidence for Romans 1:18-20

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
So yes, it is very much a heart problem, a 'unrepentant' heart at that, rather than it being a head problem, (i.e. a problem of being presented with the correct evidence), with those who oppose the overwhelming evidence for Intelligent Design:
