Theoretical physicist: Consciousness is what makes the universe exist

Spread the love

From Marcelo Gleiser at NPR:

To me, what’s fascinating is that consciousness is what makes the universe exist. Just think that before humans came to be, and discounting other potentially smart creatures out there, the universe was just doing its thing, expanding, stars being born and dying, entropy increasing overall. But as matter organized itself into living things in our planet, it eventually reached a level of complexity that allowed for self-awareness, the ability to know that thyself is a self.

This emergent picture of animal consciousness is the one that is meaningful to us, as it places humans back in the driver’s seat of existence. We will never know all things about the universe, but we have the amazing capacity to always learn more. If the cosmos had us as a plan, it surely hasn’t told anyone so far. But now that we are here, everything is different because we are able to figure things out on our own. This surely makes my day. More.

Gleiser seems to confuse existing with being perceived, but maybe that’s big in cosmology now.

If consciousness is necessary for the universe to exist, how can consciousness come from the universe?

Eric, maybe consciousness emerged from “outside” the universe? Or how about an early universe with no life or consciousness – existence did not yet exist.

And a loving God was loving with no one aware of it.

Exactly awstar – no existence yet, but the Spirit of God was hovering:)

    Seversky says:

Can you be conscious without being conscious of something?? Prior to the existence of the Universe – by which we mean everything that exists – how would God or anyone other being know that they existed? And what does God need with a starship or, in this case, a Universe to love?

    Seversky at #5.

what does God need with … a Universe to love?

Let me respond with the same explanation materialists give as to why scientific observations contradict their materialistic presuppositions: “it’s a mystery”

    Maybe you weren’t listening?

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
