Occult gaining ground among “sciencey liberals”

The alt-left are some of the major beneficiaries of this insanity. Top liberal sites like Vice, Buzzfeed, Bustle and even Cosmo push the occult on their young readers. Countless internet sites run horoscopes, as newspapers did before them. But some outlets go a lot farther. Cosmo interviews “certified astrologer John Marchesella,” who claims that Aries folks, “don’t hold grudges. When you think about it, it takes a lot of patience to hold on to resentments.” This is how you know it’s garbage. I’m an Aries. (Other famous Aries are Lady Gaga and Kourtney Kardashian. So I got that goin’ for me.)

Over at BuzzFeed, which pretends to be a news organization but is a listicle sweat shop, they do a ton of clickbaity astrology stories. There’s, “66 Taurus Celebrities That Prove They’re The Astrologically Superior Sign.” The list includes The Rock, Adele and George Clooney and I got Gaga and a lesser Kardashian, ugh. BuzzFeed did have a cute quiz: “What Your Star Sign Actually Says About You, According To Science.” Click any of the 12 results and it takes you to an answer stating: “You got: Sorry, the stars do not have any bearing on your daily life.” Why then do sites run this garbage? Because it’s web traffic. Not news or integrity. More.

In fairness, it’s not because the gullible readers are sciencey or liberals. Traditional sciencey liberals would be truly shocked.

No, it’s because they are post-moderns. They don’t believe that facts matter, only feelings. Insisting on the importance of facts or, say, laws of mathematics is a form of oppression. The occult liberates them from that type of oppression.

Science types who are not post-moderns are getting whacked by the news that objectivity is sexist and mathematics perpetuates white privilege. They don’t have any defense, not because they cannot defend themselves in principle, but because they don’t clearly understand what is happening.

And if they did, they might just shake their heads and refuse to do anything about it. Post-modernism is a direct and inevitable outcome of metaphysical naturalism. After all if our brain are shaped for fitness not for truth, we ought to aim at what works for us, not for truth.

And if metaphysical naturalists won’t consider the possibility that nature, as they know it is not all there is, there is no defense available against the rising tide of nonsense, agreeable or otherwise.

See also: Does post-modern naturalism lead to a rise in superstition? Millennials are ditching monotheism for witchcraft. But then post-modern naturalism holds that whatever you evolved to believe in is the ultimate Cool for you.

Nature, as defined today, cannot be all there is. Science demonstrates that.

and

Nature: Stuck with a battle it dare not fight, even for the soul of science. Excuse me guys but, as in so many looming strategic disasters, the guns are facing the wrong way.

RVB: As an atheist, and a materialist, and a liberal, it annoys me very much that the ‘new’ left is so childish. Their inability to accept criticism, their unflinching acceptance of all criticism of Israel, while turning a blind eye to Palestinian stupidity, anti-semitism, and plain corruption, is stupid. If people of a certain political flavour support the occult, and other inanities, then they are stupid people of a certain political flavour. I will congratulate RVB on his opinion on a population in the middle east who raise and educate their children (in the schools of course) into the murderous pogrom against Jews. However I have to laugh at atheists and mainstream Christians both at their discussion of something "out there" called "the occult". It's kind of like something "out there" called "science", worshiped by materialists like Stephen Hawking. But I"m not letting New Ager liberals off the hook either with their gullibility on some things especially their support of charismatic New Age prophets. Notice I said "some things" as there is open mindedness generally about non-ordinary states of consciousness which accompany drastic personality changes. Example: the NDE's , near death experiences, which can precipitate lasting life changes in an individual. Now what I notice about RVB is a close-mindedness about non-ordinary states of consciousness, studies of which disprove his belief in an organic etiology of mental illness. So if we accept that substance addiction is a mental illness, and if we can show that ONE experience of non-ordinary reality can obliterate addiction, then RVB's world would be turned upside down. And RVB can't have that, so he will ignore the evidence, and as such reveal his anti-scientific bias. But here is the evidence anyway in a linked video. Notice that the researcher is confident in her opinion that the experiential aspect of the clinical application of the substance ibogaine in addiction treatment, is key to its power. Well whad'ya know, it happens that some of what is experienced by these patients is similar to what is described in the NDE literature. So here is a 9 minute video to learn about ibogaine, which RVB will ignore, due to his biases: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syztZcpj69U BTW the experiences of NDE's and other similar states of consciousness are aspects of existence that are normally hidden (so that we may be able to function in day to day affairs), therefore occult. Christians typically out of ignorance assign everything "occult" to the category of black magic, when really black magic is a category of the occult, a category to be avoided. However, saying that the ‘new’ left is stupid, is not the same as saying ID is smart. ... News, this does not validate, or mitigate the banality of ID. It merely puts ID in the same category as the occult. Notice that RVB cannot resist the banalities of the ideas on this website, as he returns incessantly. Notice that RVB has not proven the banality of the challenge to show that science can prove the non-correlation among so-called 'random mutations' in a sequence to generate form or function. He could prove the banality of the challenge by answering the challenge. Notice that RVB has not proven the banality of the challenge to show how a system of tens of billions of parts, the cilia of the respiratory epithelium, could have arisen gradually, conferring selective advantage from the start. He could prove the banality of the challenge by answering the challenge.groovamos

The amazing thing about materialism is that we all experience the supernatural (the non-physical) all the time. Things like colors, tastes, distance, volume, etc., are all abstract, i.e., non-physical. Why? Because they are not composed of matter particles. It does not mean that they don't exist. It just means that they don't exist as part of the physical universe. To deny the existence of an immaterial or supernatural soul is to stop believing one's own eyes. The amazing colorful 3D vista we think we see in front of our eyes is entirely supernatural. Why? Because there is no 3D vista in our visual cortex or anywhere else. Our visual cortex and our entire brain are just a bunch of firing neurons. Colors, tastes, space and distance are not functions or properties of neuronal pulses. Every pulse is pretty much identical to another. The only thing that matters in the brain, as far as cause-effect intelligence is concerned, is the temporal relationships between the pulses. They are either concurrent or sequential. We certainly do not sense biochemicals or electric pulses flowing through our axons, synapses and dendrites. We see a fabulous, dynamic model of the world in glorious 3D. Something must have translated those neuronal firings into a colorful 3D vista. Call it spirit, soul or whatever. But it certainly exists and it is not material, a billion materialists claiming otherwise notwithstanding.FourFaces

'The occult liberates them from that type of oppression.' (e.g. facts) That is to say affords them - no don't laugh - a 'safe space'. I love that disingenuous supplication not to laugh, meaning precisely the opposite. It was, I believe, a favourite ploy of a risque, English comedian called Max Miller. Don't confuse rvb8 with facts, ET. He's a post-modernist and needs a 'safe space'. Isn't that right rvb8? Don't let them bully you with facts.Axel

Wow, coming from someone who thinks this is all a string of accidents, which is pretty childish, that shows a great deal of self-unawareness
However, saying that the ‘new’ left is stupid, is not the same as saying ID is smart.
True. ID is smart because, unlike your position, it makes testable claims and fits the evidenceET

Their inability to accept criticism
Who are you kidding rv, yourself? You run screaming from the physical evidence surrounding ID, and can't handle even the slightest bit of criticism. Your only response is to call names, claim victory, and avoid physical evidence.Upright BiPed

It bothers me a little when I see the word "occult" lumped with astrology, black magic and the like. The word really means "hidden". Sir Isaac Newton, the father of physics, was a serious practitioner of the occult (alchemy) who believed that there was secret scientific knowledge hidden in the Bible and many ancient mythological writings and symbols. Don't complain! If the tyrants start applying their tyrannical restrictions to the rules of astrology, if they start jailing "psychic deniers", they will have less energy to jail "science deniers". Sounds like they're filling the ecological niche abandoned by Hubbardism as it weakens and fades. The rich and powerful practitioners of hooey fighting and suing the poor practitioners of hooey. Result: Lots of wasted tyrannical energy. THIS IS A GOOD THING.polistra
