Avi Loeb about Oumuamua: “Nature does not produce such things.”

Maybe some of us (yer news writer, for one) have been unkind to Avi Loeb, the Harvard astronomer who continues to insist that space debris Oumuamua is an extraterrestrial lightsail. Anyway, at 29:06 in this vid, Loeb says “nature does not produce such things.” We’re told Loeb is using a design filter like design theorist William Dembski’s explanatory filter. Interesting use of design detection. Anyway, Loeb has a book coming out, in which he makes his case: Obviously, if you believe that there are many extraterrestrials out there, it makes much more sense to believe that the universe is fine-tuned for life than that it is all just a big cosmic accident. Are we being too hard on the guy? Read More ›

Claim: Solar system might once have had two companion stars

But wait! Who’s claiming this? The second author of this paper is Abraham (Avi) Loeb. That rings a bell. Wasn’t he the one who suggested that the obvious space junk Oumuamua was an extraterrestrial light sail? Look, why does the name “Harvard” put all doubts about credibility to rest? Especially in these times? Read More ›

Harvard astronomer is back: Radio bursts could be aliens

The reader who sent this tip notes, “Consider me skeptical but it’s interesting that design inferences are fine so long as it’s just aliens…” Actually, reader, some science personalities will believe darn near anything about anything as long as it IS aliens. Read More ›

Harvard astronomer tells us why ultra-complex physics theories come to exist

They are not principally data-driven. “In today’s fierce job market, fledgling scientists sometimes attempt to impress their senior colleagues with lengthy derivations marked by challenging mathematical complexity.” If he thinks evidence is important, that should rule out the multiverse. Astronomer: Seeing dead space aliens would teach us a lesson

Remember the astronomer who thought that space detritus Oumuamua might be an extraterrestrial lightsail? He’s back: Harvard professor Avi Loeb thinks humans should be on the hunt for signs of alien life and alien death. During a recent presentation at the The Humans to Mars Summit, Loeb argued that the discovery of a dead alien civilization could serve as a sort of cautionary tale for humanity, letting us know what not to do if we want to survive. “The idea is we may learn something in the process,” he said. “We may learn to better behave with each other, not to initiate a nuclear war, or to monitor our planet and make sure that it’s habitable for as long as Read More ›

Astronomer: We’re too dumb to think space object Oumuamua was extraterrestrial lightsail

Hmmm. In the real world, when you are an only child so far as you know, it is hard to compare yourself to your siblings. Few readily accept criticism for failure to measure up to the standards of imaginary beings. Read More ›
